Except when you shouldn’t. This highlights the fact that many maxims used to explain aspects of combat don’t quite elevate themselves to the point of being considered principles which are true based on the framework of reality. Maxims such as this are more akin to the rules of language, which seem always to have exceptions of note. “‘I’ before ‘e’, except after ‘c’…” If the enemy leaves a door open you must rush in…unless doing so would draw you out of a strong position and into an ambush.
