“Long before the existence of the stone knife and the bow and arrow, primitive man fought with his hands, teeth, legs, feet, and body.”

Applegate, Rex. Kill or Get Killed: A Manual of Hand-to-Hand Fighting. Paladin Press, 2007, loc. 19.

We have recorded for us in Genesis, a record of the first physical combat situation. It is, consequently, also the record of the first murder. (Though the word first is not used, it is heavily implied by the context.) The fact that the first human altercation leading to combat results in the death of one of the participants, highlights the human stakes that have always been present wherever combat is invoked.
