This weekend I saw some charcoal drawings by Casey Baugh on Instagram. Two things really struck me 1) the intense blacks of the charcoal, and 2) the painterly process he seemed to take in these drawings by beginning with loose smudges to define the placement and overall value of the drawings, then working in the details on top of this.
I don’t own any charcoal, but I think I’d like to experiment, and do as close to this as I can with graphite. If I like the effect, I can always go buy some charcoal pencils.
