Focal Verse | It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? (Hebrews 12:7 ESV) |
Notes | Since (because of the list of faithful saints from the Old Testament from chapter 11) we are surrounded by so many witnesses, endure. What must we endure? What is specifically is stated in this chapter is discipline from the Lord. We are not to grow weary of the discipline of the Lord, though it is unpleasant because it is refining us, and creating in us peaceful fruit of righteousness. Discipline from the Lord shows that we are considered sons. If we are not disciplined, we are not sons. Then, the author lists a few practical matters about living. Here, again, as in so many epistles, we have this dictum: live at peace with everyone. 1 This thought is also followed with a call for holiness. Paraphrase, “Live at peace, but be set apart from the world. |
Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord. (Hebrews 12:14 ESV) ↩︎
