The Faith of Abraham Persevering Faith: A Study of the Patriarchs: Genesis 11:27–12:9

  • Abraham’s faith is a Gospel-centered faith and the blessing God promises is fulfilled in Christ1
  • God’s call of Abraham is a Gospel-centered call to all the nations2
  • God commanded His people to fill the Earth34
  • The people sought to resist this with the Tower of Babel5
  • God spoke to Abraham 678
  • God commissioned Abraham 9
  • Abraham obeyed the Word of God1011
  • How then should we live?
  • Understanding that God’s justification is based completely on faith, and this apart from our works. This is a faith that must be granted by God1213

  1. Does he who supplies the Spirit to you and works miracles among you do so by works of the law, or by hearing with faith— just as Abraham “believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”? Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith. (Galatians 3:5-9, ESV) ↩︎

  2. Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” (Genesis 12:1-3, ESV) ↩︎

  3. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” (Genesis 1:28, ESV) emphasis mine ↩︎

  4. And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. (Genesis 9:1, ESV) emphasis mine ↩︎

  5. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth.” (Genesis 11:4, ESV) emphasis mine ↩︎

  6. Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. (Genesis 12:1, ESV) emphasis mine ↩︎

  7. After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” (Genesis 22:1, ESV) emphasis mine ↩︎

  8. So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. (Romans 10:17, ESV) ↩︎

  9. Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. (Genesis 12:1, ESV) emphasis mine ↩︎

  10. So Abram went, as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. (Genesis 12:4, ESV) emphasis mine ↩︎

  11. By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. (Hebrews 11:8-9, ESV) ↩︎

  12. For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, (Romans 4:2-5, ESV) ↩︎

  13. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:8-10, ESV) ↩︎
