I mistakenly revealed my bias today while discussing the “degradation/renewal“ cycle within history. The presupposition at play is that things tend to get worse. More succinctly, systems tend toward bloat and brokenness. It is only as systems mature, and are found to be wanting, that things are appended and added that ultimately weaken the system. Once complexity has ruined said system, a period of renewal, or return to fundamentals of that system is usually required.
